For those who are considering taking the plunge and getting dreadlocks but are still unsure about what to expect, this post is for you! 🙂
Having locs is a celebration of individuality, a journey of self-discovery, cultural connection, practical convenience, and a beautiful hairstyle that offers multiple benefits extending far beyond mere aesthetics.
Reasons why I love rocking my locs
1. I can wake up, moisturize them, and go
One of the best things about locs is the ability to wake up, spritz them with some water, and be ready to start the day. No more time-consuming styling routines or wrestling with your locs in the morning. Just a quick refresh, and you’re good to go!

2. Low-maintenance lifestyle
Dreadlocks are the epitome of low-maintenance hair. The keyword here is low maintenance, not no maintenance. You still need to moisturize them daily, wash them weekly, and separate your roots as often as necessary, but other than that, they’re pretty much a hairstyle you don’t have to mess a lot with.
3. My hair stays healthy
By avoiding harsh chemicals, dyes, and excessive manipulation, my dreadlocks have remained strong and healthy. No more brushing or heat styling— just pure, unadulterated locks thriving in their natural state.
4. Retaining length and faster growth
With locs, you will retain all of your hair’s natural length. Each inch of new growth is preserved and incorporated into the locs, therefore making your hair look like it’s growing faster than average. And tbh, it’s a really satisfying feeling to watch your locs progressively get longer.
5. Versatility in styling
Despite the common misconception that locs can’t be styled like loose hair, dreadlocks actually offer many styling options if you’re creative.
For years, I would only style them in a bun because that’s all I knew to do, but as they’ve gotten longer, I’ve explored other hairstyles and realized that the options are endless.
You can also experiment with different accessories and techniques to create unique looks that reflect your personality and style.
6. Boosts self-confidence
Locs have really helped me remain true to myself. Over the course of the last six years, I’ve experienced a profound sense of self-acceptance and confidence, especially when it comes to people who don’t agree or like my hair.
I love my locs, and that’s truly all that matters. I’m shedding the part of me that was a “people pleaser” and becoming the more authentic version of myself.
7. Witnessing growth and transformation
One of the most rewarding aspects of having dreadlocks is witnessing their growth and transformation over time.
From the initial baby locs to the thick, mature locks, each stage is a testament to your journey and the beauty that emerges from embracing changes both in your hair and overall life.
Looking at before-and-after photos becomes a powerful reminder of the incredible transformation that dreadlocks can bring. In most cases, these changes are significant but go unnoticed on the day-to-day.
Seeing the progress and evolution of your locs is really inspiring and will motivate you to continue on your journey.
8. Less frequent washing
Dreadlocks require less frequent washing than loose hair. I went from washing my loose hair once a day to washing my locs just once a week. This not only saves time but also helps to preserve the health of your locs.
9. Retwisting on your own terms
With dreadlocks, you have the freedom to retwist or not retwist as you please.
If you prefer a more natural, freeform look, you can let your locks grow and mature without constant maintenance. Or, if you prefer a neater appearance, you can retwist every 6 to 8 weeks or as needed.
In any case, I highly recommend separating your roots at least once a week to maintain the original parting at the root.
10. Learned patience
Cultivating dreadlocks is a process that requires patience and perseverance. From the initial locking stage to the gradual thickening and maturing of the locks, each step teaches valuable lessons in patience, personal growth, and appreciation for the journey.
11. Compliments and curiosity
Dreadlocks are a conversation starter and often attract compliments and curiosity from others. People are intrigued by the unique hairstyle and may ask questions about your journey or the significance behind your locs. These are the top questions I’ve been asked with locs!

13. Connection to your roots, heritage, and religion

By embracing this hairstyle, individuals can tap into a rich history and forge a deeper understanding of their identity. In this post, you can learn about the meaning of dreadlocks.
14. Unique beauty
Each person’s dreadlocks are unique, shaped by their individual hair texture, growth patterns, and maintenance methods. This uniqueness is a beautiful testament to the diversity of natural hair and the individuality that is celebrated with locs.
15. Locs blowing in the wind
There’s something incredibly freeing and beautiful about feeling your dreadlocks blowing in the wind.
16. Instant connection with the loc community
Having dreadlocks instantly connects you to an amazing community of individuals who share a similar journey and appreciation for their locs.
I have made friends locally, nationally, and even internationally all thanks to this website, but primarily thanks to the locs that brought us together. Special shoutout to Antonio in Florida, Sean in Maryland, and my loc’d sister, Joval in Nigeria!
In a world that often pressures conformity, dreadlocks stand as a bold statement of individuality and self-expression.
Whether it’s the freedom of letting your locs dance in the wind, the immediate connection with your culture or others who share this hairstyle, or the joy of embracing your hair in its most natural state, dreadlocks offer so many reasons to love and celebrate this remarkable journey.
Dreadlocks are more than just a hairstyle; they are a celebration of self-love, cultural heritage, and the beauty of embracing one’s natural hair.
Whether it’s the practical convenience, the boost of confidence, or the deep cultural connections, there are countless reasons to love and appreciate the journey of cultivating beautiful locs.
