How Humidity Affects Your Locs

Have you ever stepped outside and your locs instantly started puffing up, getting frizzy, or feeling weighed down and heavy? This could be due to humidity. If you’ve ever asked yourself how humidity affects your locs, you’re not alone.

In this article, we’ll break down what humidity is, how it impacts different hair porosity types, and most importantly, how to manage your locs in humid climates.

What Is Humidity?

Humidity is excess moisture or water vapor in the air.

  • In a place with 10% humidity, the air is very dry. This is typical of desert climates.
  • In a place with 90% humidity, the air is heavily saturated with moisture. This is more common in tropical climates, where the air feels dense and sticky.

How Humidity Affects Locs

Our hair is hydroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the environment. In humid conditions, this absorption can disrupt the hydrogen bonds within our hair. The actual effect depends on your hair porosity.

Low Porosity Hair

  • Struggles to absorb moisture.
  • In humidity, hair may become limp or feel weighed down.

Medium Porosity Hair

  • Absorbs moisture at a balanced rate.
  • Humidity may cause mild frizz or slight swelling.

High Porosity Hair

  • Absorbs and loses moisture easily.
  • Since the cuticle is already lifted, humidity makes it worse.
  • Hair swells, frizz increases significantly, and it can feel difficult to manage.

Common Issues Caused by Humidity

While humidity will not ruin your locs, it can make them harder to manage. Common issues include:

  • Hair feels weighed down.
  • Increased sweatiness on the scalp, which may lead to itchiness.
  • Significant frizziness throughout the locs and at the roots.
  • Locs are feeling dirtier faster than usual.

Tips for Managing Locs in Humid Climates

Here are some practical tips that can help you care for your locs in humid weather. Most apply to all hair porosity types, with a few tailored specifically to low or high porosity hair.

1. Always Dry Your Locs Daily

If your hair gets sweaty, wet from washing, or damp from swimming, make sure it is completely dry before bed. If your locs are still damp by evening, use a hair dryer on the lowest heat setting until they are as dry as possible.

2. Moisturize with Distilled Water and Essential Oils

Use only distilled water to moisturize. You may add essential oils for fragrance. Avoid humectants like aloe vera or rose water in humid environments since they draw in even more moisture, which your locs already have plenty of.

3. Use Carrier Oils for Sealing

Seal in moisture with carrier oils. The best oil depends on your hair porosity type. Refer to porosity-specific recommendations to find the right oil for you.

4. Cover Your Hair with a Satin Scarf

If the humidity is above 70%, cover your hair with a satin scarf. Avoid heavy coverings like beanies, which make the scalp sweat. A satin scarf keeps your scalp cool while protecting your locs from absorbing excess moisture.

5. Style in a Bun or Protective Style

Putting your hair in a bun, twists, or braids helps limit moisture exposure. A bun is especially helpful in keeping hair off your neck and shoulders, which reduces discomfort in hot, humid weather.

6. Do an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse Periodically

An ACV rinse helps keep your scalp clean, reduces buildup, tightens the cuticle, prevents frizz, and adds shine.

  • Low porosity: once every 4–6 weeks.
  • Medium porosity: once every 3–4 weeks.
  • High porosity: once every 2–4 weeks.

Always dilute ACV before using it. A common ratio is one part ACV to three parts water. If you have a sensitive scalp, add more water to avoid irritation.

⚠️ Important: ACV can slightly detangle immature locs, so avoid it during the early stages of your loc journey. Also, wait a few weeks after a retwist or maintenance session before doing an ACV rinse.

7. Extra Tip for Low Porosity Hair

Wash with a clarifying shampoo every six weeks. Low porosity hair is prone to buildup because it struggles to absorb moisture and products. A clarifying shampoo helps remove excess buildup.

8. Extra Tip for High Porosity Hair

After washing, swimming, or any time your locs are fully drenched, do a final rinse with cold water. This seals the cuticle, prevents frizz, and adds shine.

Humidity does not damage your locs, but it can make them uncomfortable and difficult to manage. With daily drying, the right moisturizing routine, protective styling, and the occasional ACV rinse, you can keep your locs healthy and manageable in any humid climate.
