Traveling with Locs? Take These 13 Essential Items With You!

Travel essentials for dreadlocks

If you have dreadlocks and love to travel, you already know how important it is to keep your locs clean, moisturized, and protected—especially when you’re far from home.

Whether you’re catching a flight overseas, going on a weekend road trip, or planning an extended stay, having the right loc care essentials makes all the difference. Over the years, I’ve created my own tried-and-true dreadlock travel kit that keeps my hair thriving, no matter where I go.

Let’s break down the nonnegotiable items I always take with me—and a few optional ones that come in handy depending on the length and nature of the trip.

Road Trips vs. Air Travel

One thing I’ve learned is that what I pack depends heavily on how I’m traveling.

If I’m on a road trip, I bring my full-size products and use a plastic caddy to keep everything upright and organized.

But when I fly—especially internationally—I downsize significantly and follow TSA rules by traveling with small, often empty bottles that I fill after arriving at my destination.

Must-Have Essentials for Loc Care on the Go

Moisturizing Spray + Essential Oils

My number one must-have item is a moisturizing spray made with water and essential oils. On road trips, I bring the full-size bottle since it fits in my caddy and won’t spill when upright. If I’m flying, I pack a small, empty spray bottle and fill it up once I get to my destination.

To make the spray, I bring a tiny bottle of essential oil—usually tea tree, lavender, or peppermint. These oils are great for scalp health and refreshing your locs while you’re on the move. I never bring more than one or two small bottles to keep my luggage light and organized.

Satin Cap or Silk Pillowcase

Sleeping with locs while traveling means making sure they’re protected overnight. I always bring at least two clean satin or silk sleeping caps. Since I wash my locs weekly, I rotate between the two—wear one, wash one.

If you don’t like sleeping caps, pack a silk pillowcase instead. You can use it to cover hotel pillows or Airbnb cushions to protect your hair from friction, breakage, and lint.

Scalp Oils

Depending on how long I’ll be away, I sometimes pack a small dropper bottle of scalp oil.

I don’t always need it for shorter trips, but for longer getaways, especially during colder months or in dry climates, it’s a lifesaver.

The small amber-colored glass dropper bottles are leak-resistant and allow you to apply just the right amount without wasting oil or making a mess.

Shampoo

Washing locs on the road can be tricky, so I plan based on how I’m traveling.

  • For road trips, I bring my liquid shampoo and an empty bottle to dilute it before each wash. This helps with lathering and makes it easier to rinse out.
  • For flights, I always switch to shampoo bars. They’re lightweight, don’t count toward liquid restrictions, and won’t spill in your luggage. Depending on the trip’s length, I’ll bring multiple bars just in case.

Microfiber Towel

After washing, drying your locs properly is just as important. I never travel without my microfiber towel.

It’s lint-free, absorbent, and gentle on my hair. Traditional towels can leave lint behind or cause frizz, so if you’re not already using a microfiber towel, I highly recommend switching, especially for travel.

Accessories: Headbands, Scarves, and Hair Ties

I always pack a lightweight scarf and at least one headband. These are great for styling, protecting your scalp from sunburn, or shielding your locs in dusty or questionable environments.

I used to bring large hair ties as well—especially when my locs were shorter and needed more control. These days, I use them less because my hair is long enough to stay together on its own.

Still, they’re worth packing if you’re in the early or mid-stages of your loc journey.

Crochet Hook

A crochet hook isn’t a daily necessity, but it’s useful for quick touch-ups, tucking in loose hairs, or tidying frizz during downtime.

That said, never pack your crochet hook in your carry-on luggage. Airport security has flagged mine multiple times. If you do bring it, store it in your checked bag to avoid having it confiscated.

Powdered Apple Cider Vinegar

One of my travel hacks is bringing powdered apple cider vinegar. It works just as well as the liquid version, but without the risk of spills. It’s also easier to carry and store.

If my scalp feels itchy or I need a deeper clean while I’m away, I just mix a few teaspoons of the ACV powder with water and use it as a rinse.

Swimming Cap

If my trip includes swimming in chlorinated pools or camping with bonfires, I bring a large swim cap.

Mine is extra-large and fits all of my locs. Even though it’s a bit of a struggle to get on, it protects my hair from chlorine and smoke, so it’s worth having if you’ll be swimming or camping.

Travel Hair Dryer (Optional)

For humid destinations, I occasionally pack a small travel hairdryer. It helps ensure my locs dry thoroughly, which prevents odor and mildew.

If you’re traveling internationally, make sure to bring a plug adapter, as voltage and outlet types vary around the world. This is an optional item, but one that can make a big difference in the right climate.

Build Your Own Travel Loc Kit

Having a reliable dreadlock travel kit gives me peace of mind and keeps my hair looking and feeling great no matter where I am. From hydration sprays and shampoo bars to microfiber towels and protective caps, these items help me maintain healthy, happy locs without stress.

Everyone’s hair needs are different, so tailor your kit to suit your lifestyle, destination, and the duration of your trip. If there’s something essential you travel with that I didn’t mention, I’d love to hear about it!
