3 Easy Ways to Test Products for Dreadlock Residue

how to test dreadlock products for buildup

Maintaining healthy and residue-free dreadlocks can be a challenge, especially with so many hair care products on the market. Whether you prefer DIY recipes or store-bought options, ensuring that your products are safe and effective is essential for the health of your locs.

In this post, we’ll explore three simple methods to test products for residue, helping you avoid buildup and keep your dreadlocks thriving. 🌱

1. Check the Ingredients List

The first step in determining whether a product is loc-friendly is to analyze its ingredient list. Many traditional hair products contain ingredients that can harm your locs or cause buildup. By reviewing the labels carefully, you can make informed choices about what goes on your hair.

If you’re unsure about certain ingredients, check this guide, which lists harmful components to avoid. You can save this resource on your phone and reference it while shopping. This simple habit can save you from using products that may lead to long-term residue issues.

2. Use the Yuka App for Instant Product Ratings

If reading long ingredient lists feels overwhelming, the Yuka app is here to help!

This handy tool allows you to scan barcodes of hair care products and provides a rating based on their ingredients. About 95% of the products I scanned are in the app’s database, making it a reliable and convenient option for those of us living in the US.

In the video, I tested the following 3 products:

  • Trader Joe’s Shampoo Bar: This shampoo scored an excellent 76 out of 100 on Yuka, confirming it as a great choice for locs.
  • Thayer’s Natural Remedies Facial Toner: Despite its “alcohol-free and paraben-free” label, scored poorly due to the inclusion of phenoxyethanol, a chemical preservative.
  • Head & Shoulders Royal Oils: This spray received a score of just 8 out of 100, with harmful ingredients like zinc pyrithione, which has been banned in Europe for its potential health risks.

The Yuka app not only highlights harmful ingredients but also explains their risks, giving you the knowledge to make safer choices for your locs.

3. Perform At-Home Residue Tests

Once your product passes the ingredient test, it’s time to check its performance. I recommend two simple at-home methods to ensure your products won’t leave residue:

  • For leave-in products: Apply a small amount of the product to the inner part of your arm. Let it air dry completely without touching it. Once dry, feel the area—if it’s sticky or leaves a noticeable film, it’s likely to cause buildup in your locs. A clean, residue-free feeling is what you want!
  • For wash-off products (e.g., shampoos): Test the product on one or two locs at the back of your neck. After washing and drying, feel your locs for any sticky or filmy texture. If your locs feel clean and light, the product passes the test!

These simple tests can save you from using products that might harm your locs in the long run. Plus, they’re easy to do with the products you already have at home.

Why natural products are key

As a strong advocate for natural hair care, I emphasize the benefits of DIY recipes.

Making your own scalp oils, moisturizers, and sprays allows you to control the ingredients, ensuring your locs get only the best.

However, I also acknowledge the convenience of store-bought products, especially for travel or when refrigeration isn’t an option.

The key is to find a balance that works for your lifestyle while avoiding products that harm your hair.

By checking ingredients, using tools like Yuka, and performing simple at-home tests, you can ensure that your dreadlocks stay residue-free and healthy. Whether you’re mixing your own DIY recipes or exploring new store-bought products, these strategies will empower you to make informed decisions for your loc care routine.
