How Does Aloe Vera Help Locs?

If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror wondering why your locs feel dry only a day or two after moisturizing them, you’re not alone.

Dryness is one of the biggest frustrations people experience throughout their loc journey. It can leave your locs feeling rough, make your scalp itchy, and even cause unnecessary breakage over time. The frustrating part is that many products promise moisture but are filled with ingredients that simply coat the hair instead of actually helping it.

That’s why I, and so many others, return to one of nature’s best ingredients: fresh aloe vera straight from the leaf.

For centuries, aloe vera has been used to soothe skin and support healthy hair. When used correctly, it can become one of the most valuable additions to a natural loc care routine.

In this article, we will talk about why.

Why Fresh Aloe Vera Is Better Than Store-Bought Aloe Gel

Walk through almost any drugstore, and you’ll find dozens of bottles labeled “Aloe Vera Gel.”

The problem is that many of these products contain very little actual aloe. Instead, they’re often made with water, alcohol, artificial coloring, preservatives, fragrances, and synthetic thickeners that create the familiar gel consistency. While those products may work well for sunburn relief, they’re not ideal for healthy locs.

Fresh aloe vera is exactly what it sounds like. You cut open a mature aloe leaf and scoop out the clear gel inside. That’s it. No unnecessary additives. Because it’s completely natural, your scalp and locs receive the benefits of the plant itself rather than a mixture of cosmetic ingredients.

1. Aloe Vera Naturally Hydrates Dry Locs

One of the biggest misconceptions in loc care is that oils moisturize hair. Oils are wonderful for sealing in moisture, but they don’t actually add moisture. Water does.

Fresh aloe vera is made up of mostly water, which makes it an excellent natural hydrator. Unlike plain water, however, aloe also contains naturally occurring sugars and plant compounds that help the hair retain moisture a little longer.

After using fresh aloe vera, your locs will feel soft without becoming greasy or sticky.

2. Aloe Vera Helps Soothe a Dry, Itchy Scalp

An itchy scalp can have many causes. Sometimes it’s dry skin, product buildup, or irritation after a fresh retwist.

Fresh aloe vera has naturally soothing properties that can help calm irritated skin. Applying the gel directly to the scalp often provides a cooling sensation while helping reduce dryness that contributes to itching.

3. It Supports a Healthy Scalp

Healthy locs always begin with a healthy scalp.

Fresh aloe vera contains naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes that help support overall scalp health. While aloe isn’t a miracle cure for hair growth, creating a cleaner, healthier scalp environment allows your hair to grow under better conditions.

4. Aloe Vera Doesn’t Leave Heavy Product Buildup

One of the biggest challenges of maintaining locs is preventing buildup. Because locs hold onto products more easily than loose hair, heavy creams, waxes, gels, and butters can become trapped inside over time.

Fresh aloe vera is incredibly lightweight, and it won’t leave behind heavy residue that attracts lint or becomes trapped inside mature locs.

5. It Gives Locs a Healthy, Natural Shine

Healthy locs don’t need to look oily to look beautiful. Fresh aloe vera can give locs a healthy, natural-looking sheen without leaving them greasy.

Instead of coating the outside of the hair with heavy oils, aloe hydrates the hair itself, allowing your locs to appear healthier and more vibrant naturally.

6. Aloe Vera May Help Reduce Breakage

When locs become dehydrated, the strands can become brittle. By helping to keep locs moisturized, fresh aloe vera may improve hair flexibility.

7. Aloe Vera Is Perfect for Refreshing Locs Between Washes

Many people wash their locs once every 5 to 10 days. To keep your scalp hydrated and fresh in between washes, you can apply a small amount of aloe. Just remember that less is more. Locs don’t need to be soaked with aloe every day. In my case specifically, I find it is enough to use it just on my scalp and about once or twice a week.

Who Can Benefit From Using Aloe Vera?

Fresh aloe vera can be helpful for almost anyone with locs, but it may be especially useful if you:

  • Frequently struggle with dry locs.
  • Experience an itchy scalp.
  • Want a lightweight moisturizer.
  • Live in a dry climate.
  • Spend time outdoors where sun and wind dry out your hair.
  • Prefer all-natural hair care.
  • Avoid heavy products and waxes.

How to Use Fresh Aloe Vera on Locs

Aloe vera gel can be added to your shampoo, daily moisturizer, or your scalp directly, depending on what you’re using it for.

In this video, I show you exactly how to extract the gel from the leaf.

Once you’ve extracted the gel, you can use it in several ways:

  • Apply a small amount directly to your scalp before gently massaging it in.
  • Mix a small amount (1 teaspoon) with distilled water (2 cups) in a spray bottle, and spritz it over your locs.
  • Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of gel to your shampoo and wash your locs with it.

Fresh aloe should always be refrigerated and used within one to two weeks because it contains no preservatives. Any leftover gel that you’re not planning to use within a week can be frozen and defrosted as needed.

Skin Sensibility Test Before Application

Although aloe vera is gentle for most people, everyone’s skin is different.

It’s always a good idea to test a small amount on your skin before applying it across your entire scalp. If you experience any irritation or adverse effects, do not use it on your hair or scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use aloe vera every day?

For most people, using fresh aloe vera two or three times each week is more than enough. If your scalp is especially dry, you may use small amounts more often. However, if your locs are not mature yet, keep in mind that aloe may soften your hair and delay the time it takes your locs to mature.

After using aloe vera, always allow your locs to dry completely before tying them up or going to bed.

Does aloe vera help hair grow?

Fresh aloe vera doesn’t directly make your hair grow faster. Your hair’s growth rate is influenced by genetics, nutrition, hormones, and overall health. However, aloe vera can support a healthier scalp by helping reduce dryness and irritation. A healthy scalp creates a better environment for healthy hair growth over time.

Can I put fresh aloe vera directly on my locs?

Even though it is recommended to use aloe gel on your scalp, in the event that your locs are extremely dry, you can blend distilled water with a little bit of fresh aloe gel and lightly spritz that on your locs.

Is fresh aloe vera better than aloe vera gel from the store?

Yes. Fresh aloe vera contains only the natural gel from the plant, whereas most store-bought products include alcohol, preservatives, artificial colors, fragrances, and thickening agents that are likely to leave residue and buildup in your locs.

How often should I use aloe vera on my locs?

If you use aloe once or twice weekly, you’ll start to notice a difference. You can adjust your routine based on what your scalp and hair need.

Can aloe vera help with an itchy scalp?

Fresh aloe vera may help soothe scalp dryness and irritation thanks to its naturally moisturizing and calming properties. If your itching isn’t alleviated and you suspect it can be caused by a medical condition, consult a healthcare professional.

Does aloe vera leave buildup in locs?

Fresh aloe vera is lightweight and mostly made up of water.

Can I mix aloe vera with oils?

Yes. Many people apply fresh aloe vera first for moisture, then seal it in with a small amount of a lightweight oil such as jojoba oil. This helps lock in hydration without weighing down your locs.
