One thing that caught me off guard when I first started my loc journey was shampoo.
All I knew was that I needed something different from regular store-bought shampoos. But it wasn’t until I started researching and experimenting that I truly understood why the right shampoo is so important for locs.
So today, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned about shampoos for locs—what to avoid, what works, and the best shampoos I recommend.
The Importance of Choosing the Right Shampoo for Locs
Before I started my loc journey, I didn’t know that traditional shampoos often contain sulfates and other ingredients that can lead to buildup on your locks. This buildup can cause residue to accumulate over time, which can make your locs feel sticky and heavy.
When I first began my journey, the shampoo I bought was a clarifying formula from SheaMoisture. While it’s a popular brand, it left my locs feeling sticky and not quite right.
So, I researched for a better option and found the one that works perfectly for my locs—one that I’ll be recommending in this post. But before I share my favorites, let’s talk about how your water type (hard or soft) can affect how your shampoo works on your locs.
Hard Water vs. Soft Water: Why It Matters
The water you use to wash your hair can have a big impact on your shampoo’s effectiveness. If you have hard water, it contains a higher mineral content, which can cause the shampoo to react differently. Hard water can make it harder for your shampoo to lather, and it may even lessen its effectiveness. This can lead to product buildup over time if you don’t rinse properly.
On the other hand, soft water (with fewer minerals) helps shampoos lather more easily, which can sometimes cause you to use more shampoo than necessary. If you don’t rinse it thoroughly, this can lead to residue in your locs.
To keep buildup to a minimum, I recommend doing a detox rinse with apple cider vinegar diluted with water (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water) every few months.
Shampoo Recommendations for Locs
After researching and experimenting with various shampoos, I’ve narrowed it down to my top picks—both liquid and bar shampoos—that have worked wonders for my locs.
Remember, everyone’s scalp and hair are different, so what works for me may not be the best for you.
That’s why I’ve created a detailed guide, which you can find here, that includes over 50 shampoos commonly used by the loc community.
Here are my personal favorites:
1. Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo
My absolute favorite shampoo is Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo. It has a refreshing combination of natural ingredients like tea tree oil, peppermint oil, rosemary, and eucalyptus.
The best part? It’s super affordable at only $4 in-store, though it can be pricier on Amazon. I’ve been using this for over seven years, and it’s been the only shampoo that hasn’t left residue on my locs.
2. Dollylocks Pepe Le Rosemary Shampoo
I haven’t tried this one myself, but it’s highly recommended by the loc community. The Pepe Le Rosemary shampoo contains aloe vera juice, coconut oil, and essential oils like rosemary and peppermint. Plus, it’s great for hair growth, thanks to the rosemary.
If you’re looking for a more natural, growth-boosting option, this could be a great choice.
3. Nappy Locs Shampoo by Nappy and Happy
Another favorite is Nappy Locs Shampoo. It’s simple with just five ingredients: water, coconut oil, grapefruit peel oil, peppermint oil, and tea tree oil.
I love it because fewer ingredients generally mean less buildup, which is a win for locs. Plus, it’s made by a company that specializes in products for locs, so it’s a great option for supporting others in the loc community.
4. Nia the Lock God Shampoo
Nia the Lock God has a range of shampoos that have received rave reviews. Her shampoos use essential oils like peppermint, rosemary, lavender, and eucalyptus, combined with carrier oils like aloe juice, coconut oil, and jojoba oil.
These shampoos are known for their gentle cleansing and great scents, making them perfect for your locs.
5. Raw Roots Hydrating Dreadlock Shampoo
Raw Roots’ Hydrating Dreadlock Shampoo is another solid choice, featuring natural ingredients like apple cider vinegar, lavender, and rosemary. This shampoo is ideal for locs because it’s gentle on the scalp and doesn’t leave residue. Plus, it hydrates and balances your scalp’s natural oils.
Best Bar Shampoos for Locs
If you’re someone who likes to travel or simply prefers a more eco-friendly option, bar shampoos can be a great choice.
Here are my top picks:
1. Apple Valley Natural Soap Peppermint and Tea Tree Shampoo Bar
This bar shampoo is great for travel and contains natural oils like coconut, olive, and castor oil. It also includes peppermint and tea tree oil, both of which are excellent for the scalp and keeping your locs fresh. Just remember to rinse thoroughly!
2. Free The Roots Cool Lemon Shampoo Bar
If you’re looking for something refreshing and invigorating, Free The Roots’ Cool Lemon Shampoo Bar is a must-try. It’s packed with nourishing oils like coconut, almond, and hemp seed oil, along with essential oils like lemon and spearmint. It’s perfect for giving your scalp a little extra love.
3. JR Ligrett’s Jojoba Original Formula Shampoo Bar
This bar is incredibly simple, with just four ingredients: saponified olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, and rose essential oil. With such minimal ingredients, it’s a fantastic choice if you want a gentle, residue-free shampoo for your locs.
4. Lokey’s Locks Organic Dreadlock Shampoo Bar
For those who prefer organic products, Lokey’s Locks Organic Dreadlock Shampoo Bar is a top contender.
Made with organic oils like coconut, olive, and hemp seed oil, this bar also includes essential oils like tea tree and lavender. It’s available on Etsy, so you’re supporting small businesses within the loc community.
Tips for Using Shampoo on Your Locs
When using liquid shampoo, I recommend diluting it with water (about 1 tablespoon of shampoo to 1.5-2 cups of water) to avoid using too much product. Focus on massaging your scalp, not your locs, and make sure to rinse thoroughly—two or three times to be safe.
For bar shampoos, lather the bar in your hands and apply it directly to your scalp. Again, focus on the scalp, and let the bubbles work their way down your locs. Rinse well to avoid residue buildup.
Finally, after washing, always dry your locs with a microfiber towel to avoid lint buildup. And if you wash in the morning, you’ll have the whole day to let your locs air dry.
