7 DIY Loc Recipes Your Dreadlocks Will Love!

7 easy diy recipes for locs

When I first started my loc journey, I relied mostly on store-bought products, but after about six and a half years of experimenting, I began making my own loc products. It’s honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made for my hair.

Not only has it saved me a ton of money, but I also get full control over what goes into my locs. Plus, it’s so much fun to mix up my own concoctions!

If you’re ready to try making your own loc products, this post is for you. Here are seven DIY loc recipes that have worked wonders for me over the years. They’re simple to make, effective, and cost a fraction of what you’d spend on store-bought products.

Best recipes for healthy locs

1. Citrus Daily Moisturizer

This is one of my favorite morning sprays. It’s a refreshing blend of distilled water and four citrus essential oils. Citrus scents are energizing, and I love how they help boost my mood and concentration for the day ahead.

To make it, just mix everything into a spray bottle and spritz it generously on your locs every morning. It’s super easy, and it leaves your hair feeling fresh and moisturized.

2. Workout Loc Spray

For those of you who work out a lot, this one’s for you. It’s similar to the citrus moisturizer but includes witch hazel. Witch hazel helps balance oil production on your scalp and acts as a natural cleanser.

After a workout, spray this on your scalp and locs to refresh and tone things down. It’s a great post-workout pick-me-up, especially if your scalp gets a little sweaty or oily.

3. Rose Water Loc Spray

This one’s amazing for when your locs feel a little dry and need some extra love. I make it by steeping rose petals in hot water for about 20 minutes, then straining the petals out.

The rose water gets infused with all the nourishing properties of the petals, and when you spray it on your locs, it softens and hydrates them.

Just a heads up—this is best for more mature locs because it has softening properties. If your locs are still new, you might want to use it sparingly.

4. Loc Detox

I do a loc detox every now and then to remove buildup and keep my scalp feeling fresh. For this, you’ll need a basin with hot water, baking soda, and essential oils. Soak your locs in the mixture for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse.

After that, repeat the process with a new batch of hot water and apple cider vinegar. The vinegar helps to remove any remaining residue. It’s a great deep cleanse for your locs, but make sure to do it early in the day so your hair has time to dry before bed.

5. Anti-Itch Aloe Vera Spray

This one is a lifesaver for anyone with a dry or itchy scalp. Aloe vera has soothing properties that give instant relief, especially if your scalp is still adjusting to your locs.

I mix distilled water, aloe vera gel, and essential oils like tea tree, rosemary, and eucalyptus. The combination of aloe and essential oils leaves my scalp feeling super refreshed. If you’ve got an itchy scalp, try this one out—you won’t be disappointed.

6. Overnight Oil Treatment

This treatment is fantastic for promoting hair growth and strengthening your locs. I mix castor oil with essential oils like lavender, rosemary, and peppermint. I massage it into my scalp and cover my hair with a shower cap overnight.

The oils work their magic while I sleep, and in the morning, I wash my locs as usual. It’s a great way to nourish your scalp and help your locs grow stronger.

7. Sea Salt Locking Spray

Now, this one’s a bit controversial. Salt can dry out your hair, which is why I only recommend it for new locs or for areas where you need extra hold. It helps tighten your locs and control frizz, but you don’t want to overdo it.

I mix warm water and a small amount of sea salt in a spray bottle and apply it to the areas where my locs need it most. Don’t leave it on overnight or use it too often—it’s all about balance. And definitely avoid applying it directly to your scalp.
